Brief introduction

Wouter Peeters has an Academic Bachelor degree in Educational Sciences (Ghent University, 2007) and a Master in Philosophy and Moral Sciences (Vrije Universiteit Brussel – Free University of Brussels, 2010). Since January 2011, he is involved in a doctoral research project titled ‘Intragenerational and intergenerational climate justice: an ethical and governance-based analysis’.

The broad goal of his project is to construct a conception of justice, with respect to the climate issue, that takes account of current as well as future living people and integrates the participatory as well as the distributive dimension. More specifically, Wouter has a special interest in the analysis of theories of distributive justice and their application to global politics and governance in view of the issues posed by climate change (e.g. the distribution of GHG-emission permits, equality, the impact of quality of life decisions on ecological diversity and security). Moreover, he is increasingly interested in issues regarding the cultural and ethical transition (of norms and values in society) towards sustainability.

Currently, Wouter investigates an integration of the Capability Approach (CA) and the Ecological Space Paradigm (ESP). The major advantage of the CA is its focus on the actual freedoms a person has to enjoy the life he or she values, whereas the ESP emphasizes the biophysical boundaries of our ecosystem Earth. In his opinion, a combination of these advantages could result in a framework of sustainable distributive justice that covers global as well as intertemporal issues.
